Message from the Chair:
This year has been a fairly active year for the branch at local level and my thanks to all those members that have supported us during this time.
Our first major event this year was the national road show seminar on Self-Compacting Concrete which was very well attended and received. This is also a Fulton’s Awards year, and once again we held the Eastern Cape Branch celebration of these awards in June at the Radisson Blu Hotel. Attendance was one of the highest of the regional celebrations in the country and demonstrated the popularity of this biennial event.
On a more local level, the Society continues to focus on site visits for members, to projects that demonstrate the excellence in the use of concrete in the region. A visit to one of the wind farms being constructed in Blue Horizon Bay was hosted by the Society in June, and this was again extremely well attended.
The visit involved a presentation from both the contractor’s and designer’s perspective. Members learned that this R 550 million private sector project will provide 27MW installed generation capacity, which is enough electricity for 5 000 - 6 000 households. Nine tall, but graceful, turbines will be commissioned, each with three blades measuring 56,5 metres.
Later in the year (October) we will be hosting another national roadshow, this time focusing on the specification and testing of concrete. The seminar – TECON 2013 should be of interest to all those involved in designing, producing and placing concrete.Click on Branch Programme of Event for further details.
I look forward to your continued and valued support.
Yours in Concrete
