Egg Protection Device Competition 2011 Inland Branch
Report back The sounds of exuberant youths filled PPC’s Carousel lapa at their Jupiter works recently, when approximately 130 students from the universities of Johannesburg and Witwatersrand gathered to witness the annual egg protection device competition. There were 26 entries (teams and their devices) this year, which is a record for the Inland Branch, and a wide variety of shapes and innovations were severely tested when a 1 kg brass weight was dropped onto the structures protecting the egg beneath. The results were very close this year with the number of hits required to crack the egg ranging from 1 to 7. Unfortunately, the team with the 7 hits was disqualified, as their protection device did not meet the dimension criteria set for the competition. So the winning team withstood 5 hits, with second and third at 4 hits each, differentiating only on the weight of their structures (the lighter the better).
Attending the competition from the Concrete Society were Darren Jacobs, Organiser and Branch Committee Member, Donovan Leach, representing the event sponsor PPC, and Branch Committee Member, and John Sheath, CEO of the Concrete Society. John Sheath presented the three prizes, whilst a small gift was presented by Darren Jacobs (organiser) to both lecturers in charge of the students, in appreciation of the support and drive that they had instilled into the event. They were Prof. Alex Elvin from WITS and Jannes Bester from UJ.
The Inland Branch would like to thank PPC Cement for their generous sponsorship of the competition and the provision of a venue for the testing and awards.
Thanks also to go to Chryso SA and Lafarge SA for the supplies of materials to the students.
