Inland Branch Annual Chairman’s Breakfast

Report Back

More than 100 members and their guests packed the conference room at the Sunnyside Park Hotel, Parktown recently to attend the annual Chairman’s

Breakfast of the Inland branch. In his address at the function, Armand van Vuuren, Branch Chairman described the activities of the Branch over the past

year, which had included seminars and mini-seminars on the durability of concrete; concrete elements in structures and the move from SABS to Eurocode.

The Annual Boat Race had been held without a turnout of more than 1,000 people at Victoria Lake Club in Germiston, and the Egg Protection Device

Competition attracted a record 134 students. He concluded by thanking all members (individual and Company) for their continued support of the

Inland branch and also the sponsors of the breakfast, AfriSam, C&CI and Sephaku.

Proceedings continued with the presentation of the Concrete Achiever of the Year Award which was presented to Jan de Beer, Publicity Consultant

for his more than 25 years of writing and promoting concrete in the trade press for his many clients in the industry. The citation was as follows:

“Jan has consulted on public relations in the concrete industry for more than 25 years and has been commissioned by such organisations as the Cement and Concrete Institute; Master Builders’ South Africa; the Concrete Society of Southern Africa and many commercial companies within the concrete industry.

Through his writings and networking on behalf of these clients, Jan has promoted the excellent use of concrete throughout the entire built environment, including civil engineering, architecture, building, property development and DIY. He has exposed concrete in the best possible light in both daily newspapers and industry/technical magazines.

His commitment to total professionalism and honesty in his writings, networking and dealings with all those he comes into contact with, earns him the right to be recognised by the Inland Branch of the Concrete Society as somebody who has made a significant and valuable contribution to the on-going success of concrete as a building material of choice, not only in the region, but also in the whole of South Africa”.

Armand van Vuuren then announced that the recipient of the Inland Branch Chairman’s Award for 2011 was Bombela Civils Joint Venture for their

outstanding concrete work in designing and constructing the balanced cantilever viaduct at the N1/John Vorster Drive Interchange:

“The balanced cantilever construction method is used for building long-span bridges over areas where construction from the ground upwards is not possible, and was used on this project to provide an efficient and economical solution, as well as for ease of constructability.

The aesthetically-pleasing shape of the piers, the ‘flowing curves’ architectural theme and the advanced crystallization technology used in control of concrete materials, production, placing and curing, are all features that contributed to the selection of this team for the award.

The viaduct has become a landmark on the road from Johannesburg to the north and is testimony to the way concrete can not only be structurally sound, but also very pleasing on the eye”.

Once the formal business was over, Gavin Sharples, awareness shifting speaker, held the audience riveted for an hour with his Section 8

presentation which was all about the actions required to really make a difference, such as - integrity, courage, commitment, risks, thinking out of

the box and being different.

The Branch would like to thank the following companies for their generous sponsorship of this event:
