EGG PROTECTION DEVICE COMPETITION 2010 Report back
For the first time, the Inland Branch has organised and run an Egg Protection Device Competition for university students which culminated in the testing of the various structures produced at a special function held at PPC Jupiter Works in Johannesburg. Students from both the University of Pretoria and WITS took part in this challenging competition utilising pre-packed concrete mixes kindly donated by W R Grace and Chryso SA. The spread of results was wide as can be seen from the results below, but there was a clear winner whose structure took 103 hits before it gave way and cracked the egg below:
The three prize-winning teams received cash prizes and these were presented by Armand van Vuuren, the Inland Branch Chairman. In his address to all those present, Armand welcomed the national president of the Concrete Society, John Sheath, to the event, mentioning that it was probably the first time for many a year that the national president had attended a local event of this kind. He went on to thank the Universities, the students and the lecturers for committing their time and effort to the competition, particularly during exam time and assured those present that this would become an annual event, but probably with a few changes to improve the concrete mix design aspects of the competition. The Chairman concluded by thanking the committee members who had assisted with organising the event, and the sponsors of the competition - W R Grace, Chryso SA and also PPC who had provided the venue, and the refreshments that followed the prize-giving.
