 Egg Protection Device Competition 2011

KZN Branch

Report Back

cimpor npc 2011

This year’s closely fought Egg Protection Device (EPD) Competition was once again kindly sponsored by Cimpor NPC. The competition allows Kwa Zulu Natal’s

Civil engineering students to pit there engineering skills against one another; each team has to construct an EPD (essentially a reinforced concrete bridge)

which protects an egg placed underneath their construction. A standard size weight is dropped onto their EPD from a fixed height. The EPD that can

withstand the most amounts of blows by the weight before crushing the egg is proclaimed the winner.

Three universities took part in the competition UKZN, MUT and DUT. UKZN and MUT had 5 Teams and DUT had 2 teams, each team consisted of 3 students per

team.

The students and spectators showed great support to the contestants with much cheering and shouting as the EPD’s were being tested to destruction, one team

against another.

The competition was stiff with first prize going to UKZN, (Bongani Madla, Samnlelo Gasa, Mzamoyendoda Zondi) with 32.7 blows and 2nd prize going to MUT,

( C  Majola,  AC Mtolo, A Ntshangase ) with 32.2 blows. Both EPD’s had an allowed for correction factor applied as both slightly exceeded the specified

weight of 5Kgs, thus giving such a close result. Well done to both teams for the great effort and competitive spirit.

The prizes were handed out by Matthew Major, the Sales and Distribution Manager for Cimpor NPC.

The MC for the evening was Phil Everitt, Chairman CSSA Kzn from UKZN.
