Annual Cube Competition - KZN Branch

The annual cube competition was well attended with a total no of 44 student and 14 industry entries. Students had to achieve the highest strength in 7 days.

It was interesting to note that a large percentage of the students were able to achieve fairly high strengths. Materials used had to be commercially available.

Any combination of Portland cement, slag, fly ash or silica fume could be used. The maximum permitted specific gravity of the aggregates had to be 3.0.

Prizes comprised of 1st R1500.00, 2nd R1000.00 and 3rd R500.00 for both students and industry.

The three successful students were from Mangosuthu University of Technology, ME Bulubobo, SI Zondi and MT Zungu.

Entries for the industry competition had to achieve 23.0 MPa at 7 days.  

The winners were as follows : T Mdanda of Contest, Elvis Nair of NPC and H Sqhipo of Lafarge.

The prizes were presented by Matthew Major, NPC Cimpor Sales and Distribution Manager.
