Egg Protection Device Competition - Inland Branch 2013

An 'eggcellent' event for University students!

Well over 100 students and members attended this year's EPD event at PPC's Jupiter plant south of Johannesburg. A total of 38 concrete 'devices' from the Universities of Johannesburg and Witwatersrand were tested to destruction to establish this year's designers of the strongest protector of raw eggs.

As per last year, the scoring was a combination of weight of device and the number of blows taken to crack the egg below it, arriving at an 'adjusted blows' score for each entrant.

WITS overshadowed UJ in the results which was a complete turn around from the 2012 event, but they did have nearly double the number of entries in the competition. The results produced the top three as follows:

Position

Team Name

University

No. of Blows

Device weight

Weight Adjustment

Adjusted Blows

1st Honey Badgers WITS  40 4.252 kg .687 27.5
 2nd  Group 12 WITS  26 4.002 kg .750 19.5
 3rd  Group 7  U J  28 4.978 kg .506 14.2

Hanlie Turner closed the proceedings by thanking all participants for their support and hard work in making this year's event a great success. Particular thanks went to PPC who sponsored the entire occasion and also provided the venue and facilities.
