2012 Egg Portection Device Competition

A ‘SMASHING’ TIME WAS HAD BY ALL!

Records were broken (as well as a lot of eggs) at the recent Egg-Protection Device competition run by the Inland Branch. Not only were there a record number of students present – close on 200 – but 45 concrete egg-protection devices entries were received for testing to destruction.

The devices came in a wide variety of shapes and innovations were severely tested when a 1 kg brass weight was dropped onto the structures protecting the egg beneath. Students from the University of Johannesburg and the University of the Witwatersrand watched enthusiastically as the number of blows on their structures were counted up.

Competition was fierce and the judge and convenor, Darren Jacobs had to fend off many appeals from students that felt the rules should be more ‘flexible’. But Darren, ever the stickler for detail and correctness, simply applied the rules of the day and the appeals soon faded.

Donovan Leach of PPC, the hosts for the day, worked tirelessly to load the devices and put them to the test. Many devices that looked good and strong failed on the first blow, whilst some of the flimsiest devices stood the test surprisingly well.

In the end of course there were winners and the results were as follows:

In summary, the spirit was good, the weather perfect and in the words of one student from UJ – “……thank you, to the organisers of the event, we all learnt a lot and had a great time”.

In closing the event, Hanlie Turner, Inland Branch Chair thanked all the lecturers and student for the great effort that had been put in by them to help make the event a success. “Because of this", she said, “you are all winners”. Hanlie thanked the Inland Branch committee for their support in organising and attending, and special thanks were given to PPC for agreeing to host and sponsor the day.
