Concrete Cube Competition 2012
The annual cube competition received a total number of 25 student and 26 industry entries. Student entries were received from Durban University of Technology (DUT), University of KwaZulu Natal (UKZN) and Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT).
This year the students were provided with all the materials to be used in order to achieve the Highest Strength at 7 days. This obviously placed a restriction on the selection of materials, the intention being to put the students concrete technology skills to the test.
The materials were a Cem 11/A-L 32.5R cement, silica fume, 9,5mm dolerite aggregate, a river and crusher sands and two types of a superplasticiser. It was interesting to note the high strengths achieved.
Prizes comprised of 1st R1500, 2nd R1000 and 3rd R500 for both student and industry winners.
The student winners were from MUT, 1st Z C Msimang, 2nd M Zungu and 3rd I L Dhlamini.
The industry category had to achieve 41 MPa or closest to at 7 days. It was interesting to note that entries were also received from administration staff of companies.
The winners were 1st Elvis Nair of NPC, 2nd Thembeka Gcaba of NPC and 3rd Henry Sqhiphu of Lafarge.
The prizes were presented by Kevin Quayle, General Manager of NPC Cimpor Concrete and Aggregates.
Thank you to NPC Cimpor for the sponsor of the prizes, refreshments and snacks.
