  REPORT BACK

Talk about Forensic Structural Engineering and Expert Witnessing.

On Thursday 3 February 2010 the Western Cape Branch arranged a Monthly Technical Meeting about Forensic Structural Engineering Practice and Expert Witnessing in the US. An interesting talk was given by Dr Robert Ratay who practices as a Forensic Structural Engineering in the United States.

He is also the author of the book titled Forensic Structural Engineering Handbook.

robert ratayEven though the talk was given with the legal system of the United Stated as foundation, most aspects are universal and applicable to our local industry. Many interesting facts were discussed, e.g. that in the United States the law trumps logical engineering judgement, unless it is demonstrated that judgement is based on a sound foundation and does not violate the intent of the building code which is the law.

The Western Cape branch wishes to thank Dr Ratay for the time he took to give the presentation during his holiday in South Africa. Thank you also to BKS who sponsored the drinks and snacks.

Dr. Robert Ratay
