Concrete in Action
Bloemfontein was the location of a technical seminar arranged recently by the Inland Branch. Hanlie Turner (Branch Chair) welcomed the 36 guests saying that the event had 4 aims: to impart information on concrete, to create a networking environment, to add value for existing members with customers and colleagues in the area, and to introduce potential new members to the CSSA.
Armand van Vuuren from Chryso presented a very comprehensive paper on the materials used for concrete, i.e. cement, stone, sand, water, extenders and chemical admixtures, as well touching on the various standards that exist for these materials in South Africa (Concrete Materials & Standards).
George Evans from the Cement and Concrete Institute presented an industry perspective on the issue of cracking of concrete as well as giving his technical insight into the ever-topical subject of concrete floors. (Concrete Cracking & Concrete Floors).
An overview of the Concrete Society and the benefits of membership were presented by Jannes Bester of the University of Johannesburg.
Many thanks go to our sponsors who helped to make the event possible - AfriSam, Lafarge, Chryso, abe, BASF and Sika.
