Inland Branch Egg Protection Device Competition 2017

The 2017 Inland Branch Egg Protection Device competition was held on the 1st of September. The event was sponsored by PPC and hosted at the PPC Jupiter plant, with the chairman of the Inland Branch Committee, Johan van Wyk, acting as MC of the day.
The event had 270 student participants from four academic institutions, namely, University of Pretoria, University of Johannesburg (Kingsway campus), University of Johannesburg (Doornfontein campus) and University of the Witwatersrand.

The students were challenged in terms of their knowledge of concrete technology and engineering design. A total of 40 egg protection devices were entered into the competition this year, with only 21 devices passing the qualifying requirements, which included the dimensions and weight restrictions of the device.

The devices were cast seven days before testing, with materials sponsored by PPC, AfriSam and Sika.

The testing of the devices showed the competitive side of the students, who eagerly watched and counted the number of blows each device would accommodate before the egg was cracked or broken. The final winners were not obvious from the number of blows each device received, since the number of blows is adjusted according to the devices weight using a mathematical formula. Therefore, the heavier device taking a larger number of blows can be defeated by a lighter device with the same or less number of blows.

The winners at this year’s event were from the University of Johannesburg (UJ), with first place awarded to “The White Ravens”, second place awarded to “Group 16” and third place awarded to “The 40 MPa’s”. The event was a great day and enjoyed by all who attended.

A big thank you from the Inland Branch Committee to the ‘UJ Demis’ for performing the tests, material sponsors; PPC’s event sponsor/organiser Lesego Matlala; the PPC Gauteng Business Unit Executive Kevin Odendaal for attending our event and also presenting the prizes to the winners; to Hanlie Turner, the President of the Concrete Society of Southern Africa for attending our event, as well as to all the students and the Universities who participated.
